Mica/Pigment Powder, uses and instructions for Wax Melts, Painting and Resin,

Please kindly note that Mica/Pigment is not suitable to be mixed with wax to make candles. This can clog the wick and cause a potential fire hazard.

Our Pigments are a powder dye without a shimmer. Our Mica Powders are a dye and adds a gorgeous shimmer and shine to all products.

To add mica/pigment powder to wax melts, mix the powder with fragrance oil before adding it to the melted wax. Alternatively, you can dust the surface of set wax melts with mica powder using a brush. A general guideline is to use about 5% mica powder to wax, but you can adjust the amount for desired effect.

Steps:

Melt the wax: Heat the wax until it is completely melted.

Mix mica/pigment with fragrance oil: Add the mica powder to your fragrance oil and stir well to ensure even distribution.

Add to melted wax: Pour the wax into a container and add the mica-fragrance mixture.

Stir and pour: Stir thoroughly to incorporate the mica and fragrance into the wax before pouring into molds.

Dust on set wax: Once the wax melts have set, you can dust them with mica powder using a small brush.

Mica for painting wax melts

To paint wax melts with mica, create a "mica paint" by mixing mica powder with isopropyl alcohol.

Dip a brush or sponge into the mixture and apply it to the wax melt, creating various designs and effects.

You can also apply mica powder directly to the surface of hardened wax melts with a dry brush for a shimmer effect.

Steps:

Prepare the "Mica Paint":

Mix mica powder with isopropyl alcohol (rubbing alcohol) in a small dish or cup.

Start with a small amount of mica and gradually add more alcohol until you achieve a paint-like consistency.

Apply the Mica Paint:

Dip a fine paintbrush or a sponge into the mica paint.

Apply the paint to the wax melt surface, either directly onto the hardened melt or onto the mold before pouring the wax.

Create desired designs, patterns, or colors by varying the brush strokes and mica paint concentration.

You can also create gradient effects by applying different shades of mica paint.

Alternative Method: Dry Brush Application:

For a simple shimmer effect, use a dry brush to lightly dust mica powder onto the surface of hardened wax melts.

This method is great for adding a subtle shine or for covering imperfections.

Additional Tips:

If you want to add a stronger shine, you can add a small amount of mica powder to the wax before pouring it into the mold.

When using mica powder in wax, be aware that it can clog the wick of candles, so it's best to avoid in candles.

Experiment with different mica colours and techniques to achieve your desired looks.

Mica for Resin Arts

To use mica powder in resin, mix it directly into the resin, either by adding a small amount at a time and stirring until you achieve the desired look, or by first dispersing the mica in a clear medium before adding it to the resin. You can also create a marbled or streaked effect by swirling the mica into the resin and pouring it into the mold without fully mixing.

1. Mixing Directly into Resin:

Start Small:

Begin by adding a small amount of mica powder to your mixed resin.

Stir Thoroughly:

Use a mixing stick or a paint-mixing drill bit to thoroughly incorporate the mica powder into the resin.

Gradual Addition:

Add more mica powder as needed, stirring continuously, until you reach your desired color and shimmer intensity.

Avoid Sinking:

If you notice the mica powder sinking, add a little at a time and build the color, or mix it immediately after mixing the resin and hardener.

2. Dispersing in a Medium:

Create a Paste:

You can create a mica paste by mixing the mica powder with a clear medium like alcohol, acrylic medium, or a drop of resin.

Add to Resin:

Gradually add the mica paste to your resin mixture, stirring to ensure even distribution.

3. Marbled or Streaked Effect:

Swirl the Mica: Instead of fully mixing the mica into the resin, gently swirl it into the mixture.

Pour Carefully: Pour the resin into your mold, creating a marbled or streaked effect.

4. Other Techniques:

Brushing:

You can also brush mica powder directly onto the mold before pouring the resin.

Layer different colors of mica powder on the mold surface, then pour resin over them for a multi-colored effect.

Important Considerations:

Mica is Insoluble:

Mica powder is not water-soluble, so it will not dissolve in resin.

Gradual Addition:

Start with small amounts of mica powder and gradually add more to control the intensity of the color and shimmer.

Proper Mixing:

Ensure the mica powder is well-mixed with the resin to prevent it from sinking or settling.

UV Resistance:

If using UV resin, ensure your mica powder is UV resistant.

Glitter

To make wax melts with glitter, you'll generally melt your wax, add glitter either to the molds or while stirring, and then pour the wax into the molds. For a simple approach, sprinkle a pinch of glitter into your molds or clamshells before pouring the melted wax. You can also add glitter while stirring the wax, ensuring it's well-mixed and distributed. Please do not use glitter in candles. This can cause clogging and a potential fire hazard.

Steps:

Prepare the Wax:

Melt your chosen wax

Add Color:

If you want to add color, you can add dye or colorants.

Add Glitter:

In the Molds or Clamshells: Sprinkle a pinch of glitter into each casing until you reach your desired look, before pouring.

In the Wax: Once the wax is completely melted and the temperature is at 65°C (149°F) or lower, add glitter and stir thoroughly. Be careful not to overheat the wax.

Add Fragrance oil:

Add fragrance oil to the melted wax, stirring well to ensure even distribution.

Pour and Cool:

Pour the melted wax into your prepared molds or clamshells. Let the wax cool and harden completely. Then admire your art and share to our social media group!

Glow Glitter

Glow Glitter must be charged by a bright light source (natural sunlight works best) and will glow brightest in complete darkness. The glow will gradually fade over the next few hours but can be recharged again with a bright light for more glow time!

Dye Chips/Flakes

To use dye chips in wax, melt your wax until it reaches the recommended temperature. Add the dye chips once the wax is melted and stir gently to ensure they fully dissolve and distribute the color evenly. We recommend to aim for a temperature around 65°C for best results.

Melt the Wax:

Heat the wax until it reaches the recommended melting point.

Add Dye Chips/Flakes:

Once the wax is melted, add the measured dye chips. Start with a small amount and adjust as needed. Testing droplets on a white surface to give you and indication of colour depth.

Stir Thoroughly:

Stir the mixture gently but thoroughly to ensure the dye chips dissolve completely and the color is evenly distributed.

Heat:

Adding the dye chips to the melted wax at the recommended temperature (around 65°C or 185°F) can help them dissolve effectively.

Check its blended:

While stirring, make sure there are no pieces of colorant left behind and ensure all chips/flakes have dissolved in the wax.

Pour Your Wax:

Once the dye is fully blended, your wax is ready to pour.

Liquid Dyes

To use liquid wax dye, simply stir the dye into your melted wax until you achieve the desired color. Add a drop at a time, as dosage recommendations can vary depending on the specific dye, wax, and any added fragrances or additives. For example, paraffin wax absorbs the colours better and deeper - see our chat on the products section.

Here's a more detailed guide:

Steps:

Melt the wax: Heat your wax to the recommended temperature for the type of wax you are using.

Add dye: Once the wax is melted, add a few drops of liquid dye to your creation.

Stir: Stir the dye thoroughly into the melted wax to ensure an even colour distribution.

Test and adjust: If the color is not intense enough, add more drops of dye and stir again. Testing droplets on white paper helps this process.

Consider fragrance: If you are adding fragrance, ensure it is added at the appropriate temperature, as directed by the supplier.

Important Considerations:

Shaking:

Shake the bottle of liquid dye thoroughly before adding it to the wax to ensure the colorant is evenly distributed.

Mixing:

Stir the dye thoroughly to ensure it is fully dispersed in the wax.

Temperature:

It's generally recommended to add dye to the wax when it's between 170-180°F (76-82°C) to avoid burning the dye.

Over-dyeing:

Be careful not to add too much dye, as it can affect the burn quality and scent of your wax melts.

Testing:

Before making larger batches, test the dye as above on a small amount of wax to ensure you achieve the desired color and intensity.
